Alton Brown did something that even my mother wasn’t able to do: get me to like cooking. Cooking was something I did to feed myself for 5 years as a single girl, but didn’t really enjoy it. When the show aired, I was newly married to a man who was raised on cooking shows and did most of the cooking for us; he found Good Eats and I was hooked. Cooking shows and cookbooks had always told me what to do, but never why, and I tend to be a little rebellious in the kitchen. Alton is nerdy and funny and Southern, like me, and I was sucked in immediately. So thank you, Mr Brown, for giving me the why so I could learn to enjoy the what.
