The “Heights” of Bakeries (and Football)

Chattanooga’s downtown has come such a long way since my childhood days here. One area that has really boomed in the past few years is ML King Blvd, formerly known as 9th Street. Many of the long-time restaurants are still here, along with new places; today we visited Douglas Heights Bakery, next door to Memo’s (famous for its chopped weiners and pit barbeque). My boss, who lives nearby, regularly stops by the bakery to bring us goodies at the office; but this was hubby’s and my first time inside. This is the only place in town I know of where you can find a bialy (bagel-like pastry filled with good things), and their gigantic cinnamon rolls rival those of Bread and Butter. We both enjoyed bagel sandwiches and cinnamon pull-aparts (smaller versions of their famous rolls). We are stuffed!

Our next stop was to the McKenzie Arena at my alma mater, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, for Terrell Owens’ Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Chattanooga is very proud of its adopted son!
